To conserve energy, is it proper to turn on and off the refrigerator/freezer by 3 hour intervals? Thanks

I suspect that this could actually use more energy. Rather than holding a relatively consistent temperature, the compressor would have to cycle on for longer periods because of the heating up and cooling down repetition.
