Trippy pictures; how do they make them?

I have recently become infatuated with “trippy” artwork and pictures on the internet (www.trippypictures.com). Can anyone tell me how they make these psychedelic pieces or art? Or, better yet, is there some kind of fairly simple picture or anime software that can allow me to crate these picture myself? Any input would be great.
