Information about Venezuela?

I need to travel to venezuela in a few days to get my biometric pport. I've never been there before as I only have my citizenship through my father who recently ped away. I have no idea how long I will have to stay there as I dont know how long it will take to get my pport and I'm so nervous and scared as I dont know anyone over there so I'll be alone and lost and I've heard it has a really high crime rate and is a very dangerous, lawless place- especially for westerners. Please could anyone who is venezuelan or has been there recently tell me what to expect..
