My grandma constantly calls my little brother veruke(sp?) (pronounced "fer-ruke") what does this mean?

she is slovoc and has had things written in russian laying around her house but if its russian i must not be spelling it right or it must be slang. She refuses to tell us what it means and my curiousity has got the better of me any help would be awesome.. Keep in mind the woman is 80 years old and catholic so it could be latin also i'm really clueless haha
